The River Irthing runs alongside the cottage and on one side is Cumbria, famous for The
Lake District, only 30 miles away, with its stunning mountains, lakes and tarns. On the other
side is Northumberland, with its wonderful scenery, historical towns of Hexham, Corbridge,
Alnwick, Seahouses and, of course, Hadrian's Wall.

The Roman Museums of Housteads, Vindolanda and Birdoswald are all close by and the wall
can be seen running through Gilsland village, with some of the most spectacular parts of the
wall only a few miles from the cottage.

If you like to shop, the vibrant city of Newcastle with it's Metro Centre, Europe's largest
shopping centre, is less than an hour away.

Hexham and Carlisle are both less than 20 miles away and are full of both designer shops and
quaint craft outlets.

A brand new sports and leisure complex at Haltwhistle, just 5 miles away, offers squash
courts, a gym, sunbeds, indoor courts and 3 heated outdoor swimming pools.

Haltwhistle Golf Course is also close by, and pony trekking, boating and many other outdoor
activities are all within easy access.

The Hadrians Wall Bus makes travelling easy in the area. If you feel like walking part of the
wall you can leave your car at home, take the bus from the village to your destination and
enjoy the stunning scenery at your leisure.

For a day trip, why not visit Alnwick Castle and it's famous gardens, Seahouses or
Lindisfarne and Holy Island on the North East coast, or Keilder Forest and Park, Europe's
largest man-made forest with visitor centres, lakes and lots of activities for the children?
